The B - Movie inspired Bots find their origins in the original Godzilla B-movies of the 1960's. I watched them as part of the Godzilla Theater series in the 1970's that graced my TV every Sunday afternoon. The build idea was to recreate a battle in progress, which would require two large scale pieces that could interact when faced off with one another on some level. After deciding on the two combatants (one flying, one grounded) I had to iron out the special effects. I turned to UV lighting, special UV paints, stand in props to help represent scale (small airplanes and cityscape backdrops for example) and lastly moving motors, fans and lazer projections.
Bot monster #1 - King Ricoh - loosely based on King Ghidorah, a three headed winged monster and nemesis to Godzilla. The piece started simple with grand ideas and direction, however, a balance between simplicity and style won out in the end. The work contains 3 UV bulbs, two working motors in the neck, and UV paint on the wing tips, mouth, and other accent areas.
Bot monster #2 - Gamma 32 - again, loosely based on a Godzilla movie bad guy, Spiga. Spiga was a huge spider that had grown due to exposure to radiation. He could shoot out massive threads to tangle up Godzilla. This piece has 8 different motors, including a copier drum bearing I linked to a motor. This part rotates a cage within a cage. It is coated in green UV glowing paint and makes up the rear end (butt) of the spider.
Below you will find various images of the stages I went through building these pieces. Once the work finds a truly appropriate venue, I will rephotograph them and update this page accordingly.
